The History of Poker Money

[ English ]

Poker chips have been made from a huge range of materials in an almost infinite selection of variations since the creation of wagering and the need to track winnings. The most commonly seen materials used at this time in the creation of modern poker chips are plastic, clay, and acrylics. Clay chips, the primary of the bunch, have been made in the US since the late 1800s.

Back in the 1800s, poker enthusiasts seemed to use any tiny valuable item you can imagine. Early poker players occasionally used rough gold pieces along with chips – chiefly made of wood and clay. By the 20th century, poker chip designs started to employ a greater prominence, and the smooth edges of older chips were given up to chips with engraved slits to keep them neatly piled up together.

There is little or no debate that poker has expanded steadily in popularity since its origin in the 1800s. With the huge advancement of web gambling and unique TV shows, public appeal in poker has feed the fire more rapidly than ever before. Most people are first introduced to poker by television showssuch as Bravo’s "Celebrity Poker Showdown" or the Travel Channel’s "World Poker Tour," and many will bet on their first hands online. Regardless of internet poker’s rise, not much competes with the feeling of shuffling weighty poker chips in your hand, throwing chips into the middle of a poker table, or creating tall pilesstacks of chips after displaying a winning hand.
