Howard Lederer was born into in a family of 5 in which he enjoyed participating in different card games when he was young. He found himself getting very aggressive in these particular card games while playing his dad. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard made a decision to place college on hold for a bit and moved to New York to participate in some big-time chess. While playing chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were difficult as he played many hours and don’t win a majority of the time. He earned some additional money by becoming an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He believed he could improve his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. He brought about an effort to get more rest and focus more on the game.
The definite improvement in his skills happened when he started gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the best gamblers would regularly challenge each other. Howard was able to access a few of the greatest minds in chess. With their assistance, Howard would tweak his logical thinking techniques. Howard applied these strategic ideas to the game of NL Texas Holdem.
Howard also helped his sibling Annie Duke learn poker. Annie was a superb student of the game as she would consistently be asking questions about the right way to make the correct choice. Howard Lederer told Annie to head out to Las Vegas and play in the WSOP tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the best female players the poker world today. Howard headed to Vegas in 1993 and competed in cash games for the subsequent decade. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, Howard made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
