Gus Hansen experienced an amazing year on the World Poker Tour where he was the only player to make it to the final game in three of the tournaments. Gus Hansen has appeared on High Stakes Poker on GSN where he bought into the game for $400, 000. You might remember one of the biggest pots in big stakes poker recorded history competing against Daniel Negreanu. Hansen won a big pot with quads against Negreanu’s full house. Gus has made many tv poker appearances and is considered to be one of the best enthusiasts in the world. While betting on net poker, another side of Hansen has been seen. Gus frequently plays in the 200/400 No Limit maximum buy-in of $40, 000. Gus frequently buys-in for the min of $16, 000 and plays very weak. He waits patiently for a decent hand and then pushes all in. I know Gus is an outstanding poker player but certainly not even close to the everyday players at 200/400no limit. Unless he is bankrupt, he has absolutely no reason to settle at the game with the minimum buy in.
Buying in for the min takes almost all of the ability out of deep stack poker. Gus is assumed to be one of the greatest poker players anywhere in the world but he cannot buy-in for the total dollar value. I think tv can skew our perception of the real world at times. The best players anywhere in the world could be guys you have never heard of before. Gus can be seen participating in internet poker on Full Tilt. He generally participates in big stakes omaha high and hold’em. Gus has shown himself as a competition player. Can he use his talents in money rounds?
