Phil Ivey has been referred to as the greatest poker contender on the globe by most of the top pros. Phil was born in Riverside, CA and moved to New Jersey before reaching turning 1. His grandfather taught Phil one cent-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From then on on, Phil was hooked on poker and wished to pickup whatever he possibly could about the game. Phil would tell his parents that he was going to be a professional poker player. Phil didn’t allow the detrimental feedback from others kill his dream of being one of the best poker competitors in the world.
Phil began competing intently after getting a false ID with the name of Jerome. He practiced his skills at the poker rooms in Atlantic City. The first number of years for him were a teaching period and coming away with a win wasn’t a common outcome at the time. He made his mark at the 2000 WSOP when he achieved 2 final tables and came away with his 1st WSOP bracelet, in a two dollar, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha event. At the final table he destroyed many of the better known professionals which includes "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
Phil made a decision to take his game to the successive level and headed out west to Sin City. He continues to participate in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players in the world. Phil credits his success to discipline and an immeasurable passion for the game of poker. Phil says that he is learning every day and is quite humble about his accomplishments. He knows he makes blunders in each session of poker and always aspires to get better.
Despite the fact that Ivey has won some large tournaments, he prefers destroying cash games on a regular basis.
